Australia has only one operational nuclear reactor. The science facilities at Lucas Heights in Sydney are subject to some of the toughest regulation in the country and operate in a stakeholder, political and public environment which is unique in this country.

Since 2012, H/Advisors APA has worked with ANSTO on profile raising around research outcomes and benefits, supporting public education around its production of nuclear medicine, proactive stakeholder engagement, and issues management.

On average our media efforts reach more than a million people each month telling the stories of the custodian of Australia’s premier science infrastructure.

One of the by-products of nuclear medicine production is radioactive waste which is processed overseas and by agreement returned to the country of origin. The first ever shipment of repatriated waste returned to Australia in 2015. In the leadup to this return, H/Advisors APA helped to co-ordinate the communications efforts of Australian, NSW and French governments, authorities and regulators, to achieve a transparent yet secure communications and engagement program. Through ANSTO, we took a lead role in implementing a communications program to support ‘Operation Cormorant’ involving more than 20 security, transport, trucking, shipping, roads and regulatory authorities and 600 police.

We continue to support ANSTO on a range of matters including spent nuclear fuel exports, independent reviews, mechanical issues and other operational challenges.
