Making the case for gas imports

The need for additional gas supplies in eastern Australia has been predicted for some time, but in 2022 unexpected maintenance issues on coal-fired power plants and a surge in global gas demand in the wake of Russia’s war on Ukraine saw the urgency of securing gas supply increase.

With potential expansion in local production delayed in several states, attention has turned to the possibility of importing gas.

Australian Industrial Energy has begun construction of the Port Kembla Energy Terminal near Wollongong, which will have the capacity to import more than 70% of NSW’s gas needs. This will ease near-term pressure on the gas market and in the longer term, support the transition to renewables by replacing coal and countering the intermittency of solar and wind power.

While there is intense political, commercial and community focus on all aspects of the energy transition, H/Advisors APA has partnered with Australian Industrial Energy on this journey, to help manage complex stakeholder relations around the project.
