Surprisingly, in Australia the term “cosmetic surgeon” is completely unregulated and has no bearing on the level of surgical training. In contrast, the term “plastic surgeon” is regulated and means that the Doctor is a recognised surgical specialist, trained by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and registered as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia.

Amid high volumes of complaints and lawsuits, particularly from women complaining about botched cosmetic surgeries, the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) is increasingly concerned that the continued use of term “cosmetic surgeon” is misleading and is compromising the health and safety of patients.

ASAPS engaged H/Advisors APA to help convince authorities including the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to enforce the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme which prevents the misuse of regulated medical titles.
